Irken Tongue Theory

I personally believe that Irkens purr. They don't just purr when they're happy and it's not exactly like a cat. They scrape the roof of their mouths with their tongues to make the purring sound (like a chain on a pipe). They use it commonly in language, (it can also be used for non verbal language, like if their mute, or through military tactics). A single lengthened purr (which sounds a lot like the Predator) is usually a sound of irritancy, anxiety, or smug amusement, while a series of shorter purrs usually show joy, pride, ecstasy/euphoria or tranquility.

The can taste just fine without taste buds; much like human taste buds, the segments on their tongues rub up against the roof of their mouths to taste.
